Rancho Cucamonga's Healthy RC Smoke-Free Recognition Program recognizes businesses that have gone above and beyond local, state, and federal laws in providing a smoke-free environment at their establishments.
The program recently recognized Four Points by Sheraton, located at 11960 Foothill Boulevard, for this honor for its commitment to 100% smoke-free guest rooms and lobby and smoke free outdoor common areas, including pool areas, walkways, and areas within 30 feet from hotel entrances.
Rancho Cucamonga's commitment to a Healty RC for all residents has led to a series of City Council actions to minimize the public's exposure to secondhand smoke. Beginning in 2008, the City prohibited smoking in municipal facilities, including parks, trails, courtyards, parking lots, and property surrounding buildings. In 2009, the Council added outdoor trnsit stops and service lines.
According to the American Lung Association, exposure to secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard causing almost 50,000 deaths a year.
To be considered for the Healthy RC Smoke-Free Recognition Program, participants must demonstrate a commitment beyond merely conforming to regulations regarding smoking. At a minimun, hotels must provide a 100% smoke-free lobby and guest rooms, restaurants must declare their entire outdoor dining areas smoke-free, and apartment communities must designate 75% of their units smoke-free, in addition to other smoke-free efforts.
Eligible participants will be invited to a City Council meeting and will be featured in City publications and highlighted on the City's online smoke-free registry.
